My old high school friend Janice sent me this. I don't remember writing it, much less that it was published in the yearbook. I was probably 14 or 15 at the time, and the school was St. Hugh's, in Jamaica (I went to four high schools in four different countries).

What a treasure-find! The nine (?) -year-old genius in full poetic power.
I've read this over several times now...lulling me like wave after ocean wave coming to shore.
Not in the least to downplay your present poetic powers, Nalo - but this belongs
in your current portfolio - try to get it published in a literary journal, yeah?
I don't use the word "nice" much because it's been hijacked so ubiquitously by advertisers, but this piece of writing/ this framed picture of a rainy day by the sea is very, very nice. N-i-c-e...
Cheers, SheLa
P.S. Nalo, are you selling your fabric art of a mermaid? (...was on your blog a while back...) If yes: $-?

Hey, SheLa. Sorry to take so long to reply. I'm in the midst of having my blog updated, moving house, teaching, and trying to finish a novel. I'm glad you like the piece. I was about 14 or 15 years old. I think it's pretty good, but it's not something I'd try to get published now. And yes, I am selling my designs on fabric, including a few of my mermaids. They're posted on the Spoonflower website.
